Flanagan, 28, was from San Francisco and was celebrating a job promotion and his birthday during a stay at a vacation rental near Clearlake Oaks when he went kayaking on the lake alone Sunday amid windy conditions with high waves, the Lake County News reported.
The Sheriff’s Office was unable to confirm the man’s place of residence to The Chronicle on Saturday afternoon, but social media profiles listed Flanagan as being from San Francisco.
Flanagan’s girlfriend was last able to reach him on his phone shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday when he told her he was OK, authorities said. She reported him missing later that night after subsequent calls went unanswered and no one else had heard from Flanagan.
The next day, a search team found a dark green kayak near Widgeon Bay believed to be the one Flanagan used when he went missing. A Cal Fire crew found Flanagan’s body on the Clear Lake shoreline near Olson Road in Clearlake Oaks about 10:40 a.m. Thursday, authorities said.aside">
